  3. I might not know all the facts in this case, but what I understood is that this guy asked you to have sex with him (cyber sex I think), and that he might have done it with you multiple times AFTER you had already said no. I also understand that he might have asked the same from other women as well. My understanding is that his advances were all done in private to you through messages either on twitter, facebook, sms, or emails, but not in public so as to not "ruin" his image.

Based on the above impression of what happened, I do not see what he did should be considered such a horrible offense worthy of such cruel punishment. I perfectly understand that it's criminalized by the law, and I hope you in turn understand that this criminalization in itself is the product of sex discrimination. That article itself is just as unconstitutional as the articles that deprive Jordanian women from the right to pass citizenship down to their children from nonJordanian fathers. They both discriminate between male and female.

But I'm really interested in knowing why it is such a grave offense worthy of this level of "punishment," which I think is in itself criminalized too by the law. I don't think you can go around telling people in Jordan what this guy did in the manner that you did, and ruining his reputation, even if you and I both agree that he might deserve it. I think that's also punishable by law in Jordan, and I think that's probably why many newspapers do not mention the full names of criminals but use their initials instead. Might not make sense to you, but I don't think the law in Jordan has to make sense and we have very good examples of that. I understand that you feel the need to save other women from the trouble of having to deal with this guy, but that's something that can be accomplished without having to purposefully cause every single Jordanian on twitter to "hate" the guy, to "tifda7eeh" in Arabic.

Now, don't get me wrong here and don't think that I'm saying you should have ignored him. No, I think the one right decision that you made was confronting him, but I question the method you chose and the extent you went to. I think you could have easily talked to the people who are around this guy, like the people who are close to him, his friends, his boss at work who is also on twitter, his parents, and you could have brought this to their attention in a discrete manner and told them that they need to tell him that they know what he did, and that he should stop. That is of course assuming you had already told him no, and he didn't stop asking you. That is of course if you didn't want to simply take your problem to the courts in the first place.

Finally, after you've read all the above, and thought about how you're going to respond to it, and preferably AFTER you have written that response, I'd like for you to come back to this paragraph and think about the following: why is it to you, a Jordanian woman, that the simple verbal invitation (assuming that's what it was) to do something indecent by a man that barely knows you, is so offensive? Is it because he was audacious enough to even consider that you might be the type of woman who would participate in such indecent behaviors? If so, ask yourself why is the preconceived notion that someone else might have of you make you so angry or why should it matter so much to you? Does it just piss you off that there are assholes out there like that? Or does it more than piss you off? Did it actually hurt your feelings? Did it make you question yourself or worry that others would question you? And if anybody questioned you and you didn't question yourself, why would that matter again? Just questions that I think you should ask yourself again and again, and you don't need to give their answers to me or anyone else, but keep them to yourself.

  4. Jordanian Liberal , i have no idea where u get your news from. Aya is just one of those who were harassed by the guy. It did not happen MULTIPLE times to her as you assume.

What the girlds did was a form of public awarness not a 'fdee7a' and he was warned offline in the past that if we hear that he harassed a girl, that he will be talked about publicly.

  5. observationofalostsoul, the following are excerpts from the girl's own tweets:

Means he did it multiple times to her. I know he did it with others too. Notice she warned him that she will "tifda7o" not that she will simply let others know. The following are other examples from the girl's own twitter stream.

    Her words, not mine.

  6. i think sex offenders & (sexual harassers) should be declared and their names should be published. this is a sick behavior that will most likely hurt many people if they were kept anonymous .. publishing their names will not only protect others but such offenders will fear the slander

  7. I totally disagree with "Jordanian Liberal" , Agree with "Observationofalostsoul"

Jordanian L.\ It's not okay when these such things happen , you're saying she should have talked with his family, boss , etc .. But NO! It's not her Job or duty to do anything like that, when he asks to do such thing, he deserved what he got, when she accepted a friend Request, or a A follow or Whatever , That doesn't mean she Accepted such things to happen

and that's the Problem, a lot of the guys think if a girl " a3tat'hom 3en " and accepted a "FRIEND" Request, think that its okay to ASK! It's not ! , That guy Brought this to himself , and he deserved it , you're telling me guys on Twitter hate " fadee7a" , well he should have thought about it a 100 times before, you can't just forgive after he starts regretting , of course he's going to regret anything After the Scandal !

and I really hope you change your mind about " It's okay to ask a girl That " because it's never okay when she lets you in her life as a friend only, and Thank You

    Regards

and big thank you aya for protecting all of our Jordanian sisters by showing the ppl the reality of this mentally disturbed ill person

  10. Jude, I hope you don't think it was the girl's "duty" or "job" to respond in the manner that she did.

As to whether he deserved what he got in the end or not, that's a matter of subjective opinion. I respect yours, but I disagree with it. I've tried to explain mine, but I haven't seen any explanation from you as to why the simple act of "asking" someone to do something indecent in private deserves this extent of punishment.

As to your last paragraph, I think his asking that was in appropriate both in the context of Jordanian society and even in the most liberal of societies. Inappropriate, presumptuous, annoying, sleazy, perverted, probably all of those things, but I don't think it had the effect that everyone has made it to sound like it did, and I don't think it deserved this type of response and this much hatred from everyone.

  11. Dear Jordanian Liberal,

we still havent heard a response from the author but in response to your query

"but I haven't seen any explanation from you as to why the simple act of "asking" someone to do something indecent in private deserves this extent of punishment."

I will tell you why he should be criticized in public: it is to prevent this annoying event from happening to someone else...

him asking what he asked for or addressed her for regardless of it being privately or in public, if it was uncalled for, (ya3ne ma shaf menha miool la yefta7 haik mawadee3) only means he is a pervert.

Again, as i stated before sex offenders and sex harassers have to be publicly mentioned and criticized for the two reasons I mentioned before:

1- in order to protect other people

2- the fear of slander will prevent him from future actions of the sort.

yes her criticism was "lathe3" and it will turn his life into a living hell but such people brought it to themselves.

in order to relate to to the matter, you have to put yourself in her place.. how would you feel if you were violated verbally or physically? especially when you really did not see it coming and did not ask for it.

again, we still haven't heard from Aya the main author.

    thanks,

    ==============

    ولكن ألا ساء ما يحكمون.

    =============

    أما بالنسبة للموضوع:

  16. Siraj Almadi, I was planning to answer in Arabic, as I hate to respond in English to a blog post written in Arabic, however, I believe that people can use whatever language they're most comfortable with, this doesn't in anyway indicate that these people do not think highly enough of Arabic, and the judgement you and Omar made are both unfair and in my opinion, very ignorant. The reasons for people using English instead of Arabic are abundant, at the top of the list is the weakness of the Arabic language in our education systems (both public and private) and the vast differences between spoken and written arabic, poor arabic content online, lack of modern arabic publications, lack of modern vocabulary (point at case, your use of the arabized word for liberal) , this is not the place for that discussion and I find your and Omar's language disrespectful and condescending. Arabic is rich and beautiful, using it is a choice, not an obligation.

Moving on, Jordanian Liberal, what he did was sexual harassment. The fact that he asked for a sexual interaction in a medium that is neither designed to nor is appropriate for that makes it sexual harassment. Had it been done in a medium that is designed for this kind of interaction (of which twitter is not one ), and those are abundant, then I would have completely agreed with you. I do not like your use of "as simple as", because to me what he did is as simple as a man walking up to a woman in the street and asking her, in a very low voice so that only the two of the could hear, if she wanted to have sex with him, or if she could talk dirty to him, her normal reaction would be to scream, maybe press sexual harassment charges.Aya's reaction was no different. I know comparing this to a real life situation is moot, as the factors that govern those interactions are different than those that govern online interactions, but I felt it would make it seem less "simple".
Woman are expected to deal with sexual harassment quietly and in private, I disagree, women should react loudly, and take it to court when they can, and if he is afraid of fadee7a, we have libel laws that he can resort to, I doubt his case would stand in any court though.

Fawzib

  18. About the guys replying in English, I don't want to defend any one, but for me, I love Arabic and I would like to reply in Arabic.
But the problem with me that i am in the US, and my laptop does not have Arabic printed on the keyboard key, so to write a reply in Arabic, it would take me ages to do so.
So this might be the issue with the other guys.
